A controversial video of a child’s ears being pierced has erupted into a fiery Facebook debate.
The mother in question has been ripped to shreds over her decision to pierce her young daughter’s ears, as documented in the above clip.
Sitting still on her mum’s lap, baby Miley didn’t know what was coming as staff members at a shopping mall descended in on her little lobes with two big guns. What followed were the piercing (no pun intended) screams of the child, who served some serious stink-eye to the grown-ups around her.
Just look at the death stare she gives the group of adults. Will this child ever trust again? Probably, but right now she’s understandably pissed off.
Meanwhile, video of the scene found its way onto the internet via the Piercings Facebook page, where it has notched up 3.8 million views and a lot of angry emoji faces.
Concerned comments ranged from disbelief to utter hate, with many Facebookers calling the event a case of child abuse, even suggesting that the mother be arrested.
“WTF WHY WOULD U DO THIS TO A BABY!?,” wrote one angry user.
“I don’t understand? This is not something a baby wants you to do or needs! Mom is doing this for herself,” said another.
“My daughter got her ears pierced at seven when she wanted to,” said an angry parent. “You may be the mum but it’s not your body!”
“Poor baby girl, mother is sick torturing her baby!! Disgusting. Stop stabbing holes in your children for vanity.”
Between the labels of “cruel”, “disgusting” and “barbaric” were some allies to the American mum, and didn’t see what the fuss was all about.
“This isn’t even a f—— big deal people get over yourself she’s not torturing the baby,” argued a woman. “If she doesn’t want it when she’s older she can take them out.”
Another added: “This is not abuse. It’s just like getting a shot. Sure it hurts the babies but so do shots. It’s easier to get them done this young than to wait till they’re toddlers.”
Others used the platform to call attention to the practice of circumcision on infants. “People are more mad at piercing a baby’s ears, an impermanent and ultimately harmless procedure, than they are about mutilating baby boy’s genitals, a permanent and proven to be extremely harmful procedure,” said one comment.
Other parents confirmed the comments of the adults in the video, claiming that babies forget. “She cried for five seconds, and then was fine. If they wait until she is six years old and wants them, she will have to endure days and weeks of dread and fear, anticipating the pain, as well as the pain,” reasoned a pro-piercer. “This way is much easier for her. 5 seconds and done! She is fine, and people make a huge deal over nothing now days. Mind your own babies and business.”
“I’m glad my mum had mine done lol I think it would’ve been worse if I’d had them done older and remembered the pain,” wrote another.
However, that justification didn’t fly with many parents, who called BS on the excuse. “They won’t remember” is not a valid argument,” said a user who drew parallels to sexual abuse. “‘Hey let me molest this child, they won’t remember!’ No baby asks for a hole to be put in their ears. The only reason people pierce their babies ears is for themselves because it’s ‘cute’. Stop normalizing this.”
There is currently a petition in the UK to ban the practice on babies and toddlers. Founder Susan Ingram has called for a minimum legal age requirement, as she believes it is a form of child cruelty.
“Severe pain and fear is inflicted upon infants unnecessarily. It serves no purpose other than to satisfy the parent’s vanity,” she wrote on her website. “Other forms of physically harming children are illegal- this should be no different.”
Ingram’s petition currently has 84,977 signatures.
