This is something that happens all the time. Here’s the latest one, a teacher in Florida pleaded guilty to having sex with a 14 year old male student, sending him photographs that were compromising, and all of what usually accompanies such a scenario.
Now, she’s facing a 5 year minimum prison sentence. As reported by the Daytona Beach News Journal, 27 year old Stephanie Peterson entered her plea of guilty as a component of a plea deal, which amounts to one count of lewd or lascivious battery sex act with a child.
That’s a second-degree felony, a severe one that carries a sentence of up to 15 years in prison, and a $10,000 fine.
According to one article, “She also entered a guilty plea on one count of transmission of harmful material to minors by electronic means, which is a third-degree felony that’s punishable by up to five years in prison. While a sentencing date has not yet been set, when the former New Smyrna Beach Middle School teacher is sentenced by Circuit Judge Raul Zambrano she faces a minimum of five years and a maximum of 10 years in prison.”
Her plan was apparently to enter no contest pleas, but those were not accepted by Zambrano in cases involving sex.
“The component of any sentence is treatment, and a component of treatment is admitting that you did what you did,” he said to Peterson.
“If you plead no contest here, they go to treatment and they don’t want to admit anything.”
Then, she spoke to one of her defense attorneys named William Hathaway and decided that she would plead guilty.
Zambrano for some reason asked her if she was being treated by a psychiatrist. A psychiatrist in this type of legal situation is a very dangerous thing. Ever heard of forced medication?
She said “Yes sir” in response. She was taking psychiatric drugs. The drugs she was taking were not specified, and it was mentioned only in passing in articles about this. Maybe her decision to do something so illegal was influenced by these drugs she had been prescribed.
Zambrano asked her: “Do you have a clear understanding of what’s happening here?”
She again replied: “Yes, sir.”
It sounds like she didn’t appear coherent to the court, which is odd. Zambrano asked her to say in her own words what she was doing in the courtroom, to which she replied “Uh, pleading guilty to those two counts.”
She was arrested by Volusia County sheriff’s deputies on February 28, with charges ranging from the period of time between November 1, 2017 and January 31, 2018.
Peterson picked up the eighth grade boy from his house late at night to have sex with him in her car and in her house, as well as in a barn behind his house.
When she found out the boy’s mother was going to police, she started to panic and sent him Snapchat messages, the State Attorneys Office records released this month show.
She messaged the 14 year old: “So she’s planning on doing something with it.”
Then she sent messages saying “I have you,” “so much,” and then “Pleas tell her it was the worst decision of my life and I know it was and idk where my brain was but that I somehow fell in love with you briefly and idk why and I’ll never be the same person because of it.”
A few other messages read: “Should I call her?!??!” and “Delete everything.”
