A mother and her children could have died in an attack by a deranged family member, if it was not for the heroic actions of a few Florida police officers. Deputy Justin Ferrari of the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office was one of the first officers on the scene of a domestic violence call made by 26 year old Victoria Rosado, a mother of three children.
Her estranged husband Emanuel Rosado, also 26 years old, showed up at the home and began an altercation with Victoria.
According to The Daily Mail, “Victoria contacted emergency services on Sunday after Emmanuel entered her home and began acting ‘crazy’ according to the Sheriff’s Office. She remained on the phone for several minutes, stating that her ex refused to leave the residence and kept attempting to break into the bedroom where she was trying to hide for him. There was then a scream and the line went dead.”
As tensions escalated, Emanuel pulled out a gun and shot Victoria in the leg, and then was threatening to shoot his own children.
When Deputy Ferrari arrived on the scene, one of the young girls ran out to safety and told him that there was a man inside trying to kill her mother.
Ferrari rushed to get the small girl to safety and ducked for cover before trying to negotiate with the suspect. Victoria then began to crawl out of the house covered in blood after being shot. The irate and unstable suspect began to shoot at the officer as Victoria crawled to safety.
As Ferrari went to get the woman out of harm’s way, she told him that the other children in the house were still in danger.
More police continue to show up as the stand off draws on, but in the middle of the stand off, the suspect leaves through the back of the house. As soon as he leaves out the back door he is surrounded by police and quickly surrenders.
By all indications, Emanuel is a very disturbed and abusive man. The Sheriff’s Office said that they had been called to that same house for domestic disturbance calls on two other occasions. He was also arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and battery at a different location, however, Victoria was listed as a victim in that case as well.
Police were even called to the home days before because he was making threats to Victoria.
After this most recent violation, Emmanuel has now been charged with three counts of attempted 1st-degree murder.
Victoria suffered very serious injuries but is expected to make a full recovery, although it may take some time. A GoFundMe for the family has raised over $50,000. These funds will help with her medical bills and for the family to relocate.
“Even though they were scared, the kids were later smiling and laughing with our deputy when he checked on them next door,” The Sheriff’s office later said on Facebook.
Still, these children are surely traumatized after experiencing something like this at such a young age, and they will likely be dealing with the post traumatic stress of this event for many years to come.
It was reported that Emanuel became emotional and broke down in court, which is unlikely to garner pity from any judge or jury. There were many warning signs in this case. As with many situations like this, where a person is abusing their significant other, the abuse continues to escalate and get worse over time. It is likely that this abuse played a role in the couple’s break up, but as with many abusive partners Emanuel became even more violent.
This is why it is very important for police to take these cases of domestic abuse seriously, especially when there have been previous arrests for charges as serious as batter and aggravated assault.
Below is body camera footage taken of the stand off that day.
